Charly Palmer
— Charly Palmer—
Charly Palmer is an acclaimed American visual artist whose work powerfully blends bold imagery, layered textures, and social commentary to explore themes of African American identity, history, and resilience. Born in Fayette, Alabama and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Palmer studied at the American Academy of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, developing a unique style that merges graphic design influences with fine art.
Palmer’s richly textured paintings often incorporate collage, symbolism, and expressive portraiture, creating visually arresting compositions that speak to both historical narratives and contemporary Black life. His work gained national attention for its emotionally resonant depictions of the Civil Rights Movement, Black culture, and the ongoing struggle for justice and equality.
In 2020, Palmer reached a broader audience when he was commissioned to create the cover art for Time magazine’s “America Must Change” issue, following the murder of George Floyd. He has also illustrated several books, including Mama Africa! and The Teachers March!, and his 2020 children’s book The Legend of Gravity marked his debut as both author and illustrator.
Palmer’s art is featured in numerous private and public collections, and he continues to be a powerful voice in contemporary art, using visual storytelling to inspire, educate, and provoke reflection.
