Omar Thompson (1950 – 2012)
Omar Thompson’s earlier works were preoccupied with the fundamental idea of form, function, and the beauty of things, but had evolved into a process of experimentation with innovative materials, ideas and the spontaneity of the creative process. Born in Miami Florida, Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Florida A & M, as well as a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio State University in Columbus. He spent three years teaching computer graphics, drawing, ceramics, and design at The Marist School in Atlanta, while also maintaining a private studio at the ArtsExchange where he actively worked on private and public commissions and a ceramic mural for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center. He has also taught at Hampton University and The New World School of Art in Miami, Florida. Thompson has been honored with several awards and exhibitions locally and nationally which include The High Museum of Art, Stanford University, and the Birmingham Civil RightsMuseum. His work can be found in many private and corporate collections such as the Atlanta Life Insurance Company and The Anheuser Busch Company in St. Louis,Missouri. Thompson was an Assistant Professor of Art at Florida A&M University.
